Seriously - Chief Kickingstallionsims. How awesome is that? The last name itself is brimming with awesomeoness, and then to throw in the Chief first name just seals the deal.
I want to party with that guy.
From this morning's AP recap of the UCLA/Stanford tilt:
UCLA needed an extra five minutes to chop down the Lopez twins.
Stymied most of the game by the 7-foot brothers, the third-ranked Bruins broke out in overtime and defeated No. 7 Stanford 77-67 Thursday night to clinch the Pac-10 title outright.
The Bruins (27-3, 15-2) won their third consecutive regular-season title on their home court for the first time in three years and put themselves in solid position to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
So, did UCLA win their third consecutive regular-season title, or did they win it for the first time in three years? Or was it the first time in three years that they had won their third consecutive regular-season title on their home court? Actually, I hope it's not that last one, because it doesn't even make any fucking sense. The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but me thinks it's impossible to tell exactly what it is the Bruins achieved. What this sportswriter achieved, however, is melting my brain trying to parse any logic out of that last passage.
As a former aspiring and not-very-good sportswriter, I know how it easy it is to fall into this type of writing, especially when it's late and you're on deadline. Homeboy probably just wanted to put the achievement in perspective. That perspective, unfortunately, is totally fucked after this twisted verbage rears its ugly head. Two questions:
1) How in the hell does this happen? Not one single win in 11 fucking years?
2) Why does this program still exist? What good can it possibly do to offset such incredible futility?
I'm at a loss for words.
Butler versus Gonzaga in the finals of the preseason NIT? There won't have been that many pasty crackers playing basketball in the Garden at the same time since Reconstruction. Yikes.
Something tells me this wasn't the matchup ESPN was envisioning when the tourney got under way.
Oh well. Enjoy your little NIT title, Zags. And then enjoy your second-round exit in March. Again.
Bobby Knight has long been, and continues to be, a magnanimous asshole, and my dislike for him has yet to waver, despite the fact he left Indiana a while ago.
But as much as I dislike the guy, I still respect him for one important reason: Unlike 99.9 percent of the coaches in big-time Div. 1 basketball and football, Knight makes the education of his student-athletes a top priority. We are reminded of this once again today.
He's an ass, but you have to respect him kicking his leading scorer and leader off the team. Hopes are high for the Tech team this year, too, so it's certainly not a popular move. But he did it anyway.
